    Kel Tec p-11 trigger woes

    Hi all-
    slight sidetrack from my single shot .223 project, but I have to ask while I am thinkin about it. I have a p-11, and the trigger pull, well it is just AWFULL: As I understand the manual, the super strong hammer spring is the only thing that makes it go bang, as the hammer even falls on the firing pin when the slide closes, but not hard enough to fire. It has no passive or active safeties of any kind. I detached the hammer spring(which is an extension- type spring) and the actual trigger/ hammer movement isn't bad. Smooth and very little friction. However, when assembled it takes 3 men and a boy to pull the trigger. My 8 pound pull gage maxes out LONG before the end of the pull.It is so heavy that my finger deforms, and gets pinched between the end of the trigger and the trigger guard as I pull it. Is there anything that can be done to improve it without reducing reliability? It would be my everyday carry-gun (I wear shorts most of the year, and my 1911 doesn't hide well) if I could only hit something with it!!!

    A 1911 is aprox 9' long and has a 5' barrel length. If you carry the gun in your waistband and the gun is exposed you must be wearing a 'G' string for shorts. LOL

    LMAO. funny, but not what I was trying to say. I don't generally wear a shirt with tails in the summer, so I can't wear an outside-the-pants holster, and my inside the waistband holster prints thru my cargo shorts. My 1911 is also heavy enough to make the shorts sag, unless I wear a wide belt, which is uncomfortable when I am sitting However, the front pockets are so big and baggy, I can pocket my KEL-TEC and you can't even see it

    Several years back I bought a P11. Took it out, shot half a box of ammo. Took it home, cleaned it up and went back to the gun store. Put it on the counter and told them I would like to trade it. For what they said? I replied anything. Wound up with a nice shooting British Enfield and ammo.
    I have seveal of the little pocket pistols in 32 and 380 that I love, but not the p11

    I can conceal my Glock 36 in the summer inside my waist band by just wearing an oversized shirt.
    I can't believe the people that will bet their life on such an underpowered cartridge as a .380 when you can buy guns chambered in 9mm that are the same size and ammo is readily available.

    Second rule : Bring enough gun!
    I know 2 people that shot themselves with .380s and they are still walking and talking and I am glad because they are friends, but I would not want the same out come if my safety was being threatened.

    The P-11 is a 9MM, with a capacity of 10+1, and is rated by the factory for occasional +p ammunition use. I shoot 124 gr jacketed hollow point +Ps for defense. The point of this post was to get tips on tuning the trigger on this pistol, not to start a debate over cartridge power or concealed carry options. Feel free to start a new thread if you want to change the subject. Everyone has their own opinion on minimum power, but the fact is, too large/ thick/ heavy/ punishing to shoot means the gun is in the safe instead of with you when you need it. Find a gun you LIKE to carry and shoot, and then do so.

    I don't know how to improve the P11.
    BUT
    The Kahr PM9 is about the same size (I think smaller, not much bigger than a P3AT) and it's better. Not nearly as nice as an EMP or other nice 1911, but nicer than the P-11s I tried.
    (That's a somewhat more constructive answer to your problem, but of course does not apply to your original question.)

    Shows how long it has been since I had a Kel tec.
    I had a similar problem with a derringer and when I got a decent trigger pull it would misfire. I think you will experience the same problem. Ruger Redhawks are a similar situation.
    Disassembly and polishing may help but these problems are usually due to poor design.

    And actually it is a TWELVE+1 gun if you buy the 12 round mags from Keltec. making it a P13.
    I had one and liked it, the older ones had a heavier spring, you can tell by serial number and some reading on the KTORG page if yours has the lighter spring. Honestly after working with mine for some time I became quite ok with the stock trigger as is, it does take some work on the shooters part. The P11 is a lot more pleasant to shoot even with +p than the PF-9 IMHO.
    They built the same exact gun as a 357 sig and a 40, must have been quite a handful.
    Mu P11 would remind me not to limp wrist it by hitting me in the forehead with empty cases :-).

    I had one as well. I bought it with the intention of having a small , decent capacity carry gun. I eventually realized that I didn't like shooting the thing and never carried it.
    I had always meant to put on a trigger shoe but never got around to it before getting rid of it. I figured the wider feel of the trigger with the shoe on it would at least make it more comfortable to shoot(I had the same trigger/guard pinching problem you mentioned), possibly even a lighter feel with the pull weight being distributed over a wider area on your finger.

    Back to the OP how many rounds have you put through it? My little P3at took over a hundred to feel decent. After 150 or so it became nice to shoot, the book does say it needs a break in..
    I had to deburr, file and sand the mold flashing in the trigger guard and a few other spots. I was getting scrapes on my hands..
    As for the anti 380 folks, well I was one too. I still agree that the 380 is a minimal cartridge. However the little P3at with a belt clip is also easy to carry. If I am going some place that isnt hairy, like walking the dog. I can just slip it in my sweat pants and go. I cannot do that with my Glocks or even my J frame Smith. So its kinda something like that or nothing and it miles ahead of a 25acp or even a 32 caliber gun. I also load up with good ammo like CorBon.

    a new hammer sping pin (found under the butt) with a depressed center is the usual method to lighten the pull on a P-11. I have also dressed the mechanism a bit to smooth the friction surfaces.
    A spring pin like this (-----_-----) will effectively move the spring anchor point closer.
