All lawn mower discharge chutes have a torsion spring in the door. Its function is to hold the door completely closed or provide a tight seal around a lawn clippings bag. The sign of a broken or faulty spring is when you release the door and it does not close on its own, or does not close tightly around a lawn bagger and allows clippings to escape the bag. Craftsman walk-behind mowers have a rear discharge chute, and the riding mowers have a side discharge chute to attach clippings bags. Replacing the spring on a Craftsman side or rear discharge mower is an inexpensive repair.

Place your Craftsman lawn mower on a flat surface, such as a driveway or garage. Remove the spark plug from the spark plug boot to prevent the mower from starting accidentally.

Lift the side discharge door and hold it in one place with one hand. Remove the bolt on the top, inside of the discharge door with an adjustable wrench.

Place the chute on a workbench or table with the spring pointing upward. A metal bracket covers the spring, with a hinge pin in the center of the spring, like a door hinge. Grasp the hinge pin with needle nose pliers, and pull it to the right and out of the spring, bracket and chute.

Pull the bracket and faulty torsion spring up and off the chute. Insert the straight tip of a new torsion spring into the hole in the chute. Replace the bracket over the spring. Align the holes in both ends of the bracket with the chute holes and hold it in place with one hand.

Insert the hinge pin from the right into the center of the spring, and slide it through the bracket and chute holes with your other hand. Tap the end of the hinge pin with a rubber mallet to insert it into the far end of the chute. Grasp the hinge pin with needle nose pliers, and center it in the spring and chute.

Place the chute on the lawn mower discharge area while aligning the hole in the chute and the hole in the lawn mower. Insert the bolt and tighten it with an adjustable wrench. Replace the spark plug boot on the spark plug.

Tip

• Replacement torsion springs are available at hardware stores and home improvement centers.

Warning

• Use attachments that are approved by Craftsman on a lawn mower and do not operate a mower without the discharge chute closed, with a mulching plug or clippings bag.
